Matthew J. Karas

Matthew J. Karas brings the perspectives of both a trial attorney and a practicing clinician to complex medical malpractice litigation and healthcare law. A partner at Rendigs, Fry, Kiely & Dennis, LLP, he represents both healthcare entities, including hospitals and health systems, and individual providers, including physicians, nurses, advanced practice providers, and other clinicians. His practice includes medical negligence and wrongful death litigation, institutional and professional liability claims, and related healthcare matters.

Matt brings more than two decades of clinical and health-system experience to his legal practice. He holds a Doctor of Nursing Practice and is nationally board certified as both a family medicine nurse practitioner and an emergency medicine nurse practitioner. His clinical career has included emergency and intensive care nursing, nearly a decade as a critical care flight nurse, and practice as a nurse practitioner in emergency medicine, urgent care, hospital medicine, and family medicine. He has also served in health-system leadership roles overseeing advanced practice providers and nursing staff across multiple hospitals and continues his clinical practice in emergency medicine.

That dual perspective informs Matt’s evaluation of medical records, expert opinions, standards of care, and causation. He understands real-time care delivery, clinical decision-making under pressure, and how institutional systems and operations shape care. He applies that understanding to defend healthcare professionals and institutions in medical malpractice litigation and counsel them on broader healthcare law matters involving clinical, operational, policy, and regulatory concerns. Outside his legal and clinical work, Matt enjoys spending time with his family and pursuing interests in aviation and outdoor adventure, including flying, skydiving, scuba diving, snowboarding, and climbing.
